A total of $10,000 is up for grabs as top masters individuals and club teams compete for national honors and U.S. records.
A total of $2,520 in Dick's Sporting Goods Bonus Certificates will be awarded in the Men's 5K and in the MVP Health Care Women's 5K.
Cohen & Cohen, LLP is sponsoring a $250 cash award for the first Central New York finisher overall in the MVP Health Care Women's 5K at the Festival.
The Syracuse Festival of Races presents this award annually to the top Central New York finisher in the Men's 5K at the Festival. The $250 cash award is named in honor of John Trowse, who died unexpectedly in 2005, at age 38, of a previously undiagnosed heart ailment. John was an outstanding and popular runner at Fayetteville-Manlius High School, Cayuga Community College, SUNY Brockport, and as a post-collegian with the Auburn Pulsars and the Syracuse Chargers Track Club. Many thanks to Allied Sign Company for its sponsorship of the John Trowse Memorial Award.
School groups of 25 or more finishers in the 3K Fun & Fitness Run will receive special fitness awards. The Syracuse City School District group with the largest number of participants will be presented with the Boys and Girls Cup. The non-SCSD school with the largest number of participants will be presented with the Festival Cup. The school with the largest number of participants is offered the opportunity to design the artwork for next year's 3K Fun & Fitness Run T-shirt.
Special awards will go to the top two-person family teams based on the sum of the 5K finishing times of the two team members. Awards are presented to the scoring members of the top three teams in nine different categories: husband-wife (H/W); masters husband-wife (H/W40); mother-daughter (M/D); father-son (F/S); mother-son (M/S); father-daughter (F/D); sister-sister (S/S); brother-brother (B/B); brother-sister (B/S).
That's right! At the SFoR we like to take good care of the last across the line as well as those at the front, so we have awards for the final twenty finishers in both the Men's 5K and the MVP Health Care Women's 5K. Don't assume you're a shoe-in for these; the SFoR is for runners of all paces, so competition for these may be tougher than your think!
SFoR awards (Dick's Bonus Certificates) will go three deep in these age groups: 13 & under, 14-19, 20-29, and five-year age groups as high as needed. We're awarding the usual $50 Bonus Certificate for first; $20 for second; and $10 for third.
The SFoR offers $1,000.00 course record bonuses for the male athlete who wins the men's 5K and improves upon John Itati's men's course record of 13:27 (2002) and the female athlete who wins the women's 5K and improves upon Anne Hare's women's course record of 15:36 (1994).
For the tenth consecutive year, we're delighted to be hosting runners from throughout the United States competing in the USATF Masters 5 km Championships for both men and women. The Masters Championships will be run concurrently with the 24th anniversary edition of our Men's 5K (8:50 a.m. start) and MVP Health Care Women's 5K (9:50 a.m. start) races--a rare opportunity for runners of all ages to run shoulder to shoulder with many of our country's most accomplished age-group distance runners.
Information regarding our 2017 race headquarters hotel will be available here as soon as we have selected the property. All SFoR runners and their guests can expect a special Syracuse Festival of Races room rate and a location convenient to the race site.
As always, SFoR volunteers will be hosting a hospitality room for out-of-town USATF Masters Championship entrants staying at our race headquarters hotel. The hospitality room will be open from Friday afternoon through Sunday at noon, and it will be your most convenient source of complimentary beverages, snacks, directions, general information, course tour sign-up, and transportation to and from the race site.
For the convenience of all runners staying at our race headquarters hotel, packets for USATF Masters 5 km Championship entrants (only) will be available for pickup in the SFoR Hospitality Room on Saturday, September 30th, between 3:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
School group coordinators may turn in entries and pick up bib numbers and T-shirts for their groups at 213 Scott Avenue between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 28th.
Pre-registered runners can pick up their bib numbers and T-shirts on Saturday, September 30th, from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the Dick's Sporting Goods on Erie Boulevard in DeWitt. Packets not picked up on Saturday may be picked up at the race site beginning at 7:30 a.m. on race morning. For early pick-up and the best selection of shirt sizes, come on Saturday!
Runners can enter at the Saturday pickup as well as on the morning of the race. 5K entry is $30 on Saturday and $35 on race morning. The entry fee for either the Fun & Fitness Run or the Tops Community Walk is $15.00 on race weekend, regardless of your age.
Race morning activities in the start/finish area will include our Wellness Way Expo, providing information about a wide range of products, services, and organizations related to personal health and wellness. SFoR participants, spectators, and volunteers are invited to stroll Wellness Way outside Manley Field House before and after their events on race morning.
All 2017 USATF Masters 5 km Championship awards will be presented beginning at 12:30 p.m. on race day at our race headquarters hotel. Admission to the 2017 USATF Masters 5 km Championship awards presentation is free for all Syracuse Festival of Races participants and their guests.
In conjunction with the awards presentation in our race headquarters hotel, a hearty buffet brunch will be available beginning at noon and extending through the Awards Presentation. Anyone wishing to enjoy the Awards Brunch along with the awards presentation may purchase Brunch tickets in advance via either our paper entry form or the USATF Masters 5 km Championship registration page. Our 2017 Awards Brunch is the price of $20.00 for runners entered in the 2017 USATF Masters 5 km Championships and their guests.

The 3K Fun & Fitness Run at the Syracuse Festival of Races was actually born six years prior to the 1993 birth of the SFoR. The non-competitive event was run in 1987 as a 5K Fun & Fitness Run that was held in Onondaga Lake Park in conjunction with the Syracuse Freihofer's Run for Women 10K.
When the Syracuse Freihofer's Run for Women was discontinued following the sale of the Freihofer Baking Company in 1992, one of the key drivers for the creation of the Syracuse Festival of Races was the desire of the Oja family and the Syracuse Chargers Track Club's board of directors to keep the enormously popular and beneficial 3K Fun & Fitness Run alive.
While the 3K Fun & Fitness Run is open to and enjoyed by individual walkers and runners as well as groups, school group participation has long been the heart of the event. Individual school buildings--elementary, middle, K through 8, and high school--have all enjoyed participating in the name of their schools and school communities.
Participating school groups have included students, older siblings, parents, aunts, uncles, teachers, principals, and non-teaching support staff. Schools are recognized not for how fast they cover the 3K (1.86-mile) course, but rather for how many members of the school community make the commitment to personal, family, and community fitness through aerobic exercise.
All participating school groups of 15 or more receive a framed certificate of excellence suitable for display in their school. The three largest school groups each year are recognized with special plaques. The largest school group from a Syracuse City School District school earns the right to host the rotating Syracuse Festival of Races "Boys & Girls Cup" for the coming year. The largest school group from a non-Syracuse City School District school earns the right to host of the rotating Syracuse Festival of Races "Festival Cup" for the coming year. And the largest school group overall is invited to create the design for the subsequent year's 3K Fun & Fitness Run participant T-shirt.
Faculty, administrators, and parents agree that building a school group and participating together in a celebratory and non-competitive aerobic event is an extremely effective way to foster cooperative interaction among children, teachers, parents, and school staff in a setting entirely removed from the school itself. It's a great community building activity; it's a great goal-setting activity; it's a great antidote to sedentary behavior; and it's an exciting way to start the school year.
Some of the greatest performers at the Syracuse Festival of Races each year are its volunteers. To show them how much we appreciate their efforts on behalf of community fitness, we do everything we can to make their volunteer experience enjoyable, fulfilling, and rewarding.
What do we give our volunteers?
You tell us what job you'd most like to do, and we'll do our best to have you doing exactly what you request. Want to help before race day? After race day? Race morning after you run the 5K yourself? Course entertainment? Refreshments? Photography? Recycling? Course monitoring? Finish area? Technical work? Social media? Athlete hospitality? Grunt work? We'll start by asking you what you'd most like to do!
Like the registered runners and walkers at the Festival, each of our volunteers receives a colorful, 100% cotton volunteer t-shirt, which we order in sizes small, medium, large, extra-large, and even extra-extra-large. We want your volunteer shirt to fit you, so that you can wear it with pride!
All volunteers will be welcome to help themselves to a variety of hot and cold beverages, Starbuck's coffee, Freihofer's and Entenmann's products, and other refreshments available in the volunteer check-in tent on race morning.
Because there's no event in Syracuse quite like the Festival, there's no feeling quite like that experienced by the Festival volunteers. It's a great feeling to know that you've significantly contributed to a masterpiece of a community event, hundreds of personal or season bests by your fellow runners, dozens of national championship performances, and even national records and world bests at the world's most popular road race distance!
